Raf's autumn winter 2004 "Waves" collection was built primarily around a quote written by philosopher Ortega y Gasset:
"Life is, in itself and forever, shipwreck. To be shipwrecked is not to drown. The poor human being, feeling himself sinking into the abyss, moves his arms to keep afloat. This movement of the arms is culture—a swimming stroke."
Gasset's works embodied a sense of duty to combat popular beliefs in order to explain reality and promote new ideas.
Gasset's philosophy certainly exhibits existential elements and so does the Waves collection. The quote was printed on a variety of items and in varying positions including on some of the care tags.
